I just saw on Facebook that Huey Lewis has lost his hearing. According to the post:
Although I can still hear a little, one on one, and on the phone, I can’t hear music well enough to sing. The lower frequencies distort violently making it impossible to find pitch. I’ve been to the House Ear Institute, the Stanford Ear Institute, and the Mayo Clinic, hoping to find an answer. The doctors believe I have Meniere’s disease and have agreed that I can’t perform until I improve.
Huey Lewis and the News was one of the very first cassettes (yes kids, cassettes) I purchased. The album was Sports and I was 7 or 8 years old. I played that tape to death.
The songs are legendary! Heart of Rock and Roll. Heart and Soul. Bad is Bad. I Want a New Drug. If This is It.
I can hear that ‘heartbeat’ of Heart of Rock and Roll, as I type this.
Then more albums followed and, of course, he was a big part of Back to the Future with his tunes Back in Time and The Power of Love.
His music was filled with horn lines, ripping harmonica solos and amazing harmonies. It’s REAL music. I hope you can find a cure, Huey. We need more real music!
I know what I’ll be listening to on Spotify today. What are you favorite Huey Lewis songs?
