Little Changes to Save The Earth – Bye Bye Plastic Straws!

Recently the news has been filled with large corporations and restaurant chains saying they’re ditching single-use plastic straws and going for alternatives.

Disney World had this to say in a July 26, 2018 statement:

By mid-2019, The Walt Disney Company will eliminate single-use plastic straws and plastic stirrers at all owned and operated locations across the globe, amounting to a reduction of more than 175 million straws and 13 million stirrers annually.

That’s a lot of straws! But they’re listening to the words of dear ole’ Mr. Disney.

At our house, we make fruit and yogurt smoothies for breakfast multiple times a week.

We try to wash out the straws best we can each morning, but eventually they just have to go into the recycle bin.

So, we decided to make a change at our house, too. If it’s good enough for Mickey Mouse – it’s good enough for us!

With the smoothies, you have to be careful you get a WIDE straw. Those skinny straws aren’t going to cut it. The fruit gets wedged in there and you never know when it’s going to shoot up the straw and hit you in the back of the throat!

Paper straws are pretty, but they taste like sucking on a lollypop stick and they dissolve into nothing in a single use too.

And drinking right from the glass doesn’t cut it with three kids under the age of 5!

My wife found the answer on Amazon. A seller named Sungrace makes reusable, stainless steel, extra wide straws! And they’re only $7.99 currently on Amazon – AND PRIME!

They arrived with a little cleaning brush and we’re now enjoying our smoothies without the guilt of filling the worlds’ oceans with plastic straws.

One tip for you – don’t leave the straw in a smoothie in the fridge to drink later. Stainless steel can get COLD!

How about you? What little changes are you making in your lives to help Earth as best as you can? Share with us – we’d love to hear.

So long!
Keith
