ModernMan Star Wars Saturday Top 10 – Favorite Star Wars Movies

Hello readers!

A few years ago, a merry band of Star Wars fanatics and I put together Top 10 Lists of our favorite Star Wars characters, ships, aliens, and so much more!

We’re going to resurrect this here on MindofModernMan for Star Wars Saturdays! What better day to launch it than on International Star Wars Day? May the 4th Be With You!

As we await The Rise of Skywalker to hit theaters this December, we currently have TEN Star Wars films that we can rank and that’s what our first question will focus on this week!

I was joined by SW Mega Fans: Kevin, Mike, Matt, Chris, Jeff, Josh, Lindsay, Dave, Jon and Joe this week. Everyone sent in the ten Star Wars films in order of their favorites. We put the list together and share the results here with you!

Remember, we vote with our hearts – these are our lists of FAVORITES, not necessarily the “BEST”. After the list, keep reading for some of my thoughts on what the voting showed.

Keith’s Thoughts

Here is what I get from looking at the voting….

The original trilogy is BY FAR still the love of everyone. Empire was 1st or 2nd on EVERY list and got 7 of 11 first place votes. A New Hope scored 2 first place votes. Return of the Jedi got one first place vote. Rogue One received the remaining first place vote.

The Prequels are universally lesser movies to the fans, but they did like Revenge of the Sith MORE than Solo or The Last Jedi!

The Last Jedi is the cilantro of the movies. Got a vote as high as 4th place, but also scored two 10th place votes.

Everyone is bored by Attack of the Clones and its senate-focus tedium. It received 6 of 11 last place votes and three of the 9th place votes.

The only thing close to bumping Return of the Jedi from the top 3 is Force Awakens which scored four 3rd place votes!

I think Solo is getting a bum wrap – it’s a fun ride, and someone please convince me WHY there is such love for Rogue One? I just do not get it.

That’s our list… what about you? Share your thoughts on our list and your own rankings in the comments below and we’ll be sure to comment back!

Cheers!
Keith

  1. I love Rogue One! Here’s why: it’s a completely new story from a character who has no relationship to anyone we know in the Universe- yet the outcome of the events leads perfectly up to A New Hope. I also think it’s cool because you really get the sense that the people either don’t believe in the Force or have given up on it dismissing it as a hokey religion. Nobody believes or relies on it except for some blind man in a humble village. Which again, leads up perfectly to A New Hope when we start to learn more about the Force.

    1. Great points, but I think you hit on WHY I don’t like it – I didn’t know or care about anyone. And I knew they’d all die by the end. I never got invested. I didn’t care about any of the characters.

      1. I think it was also one of the best acted of the Star Wars films. Krennic, Jyn, and basically all of the characters including the bit parts. I actually am proud of them for being bold enough to make something original and I empathized with all of the characters (even though I didn’t know then before watching). They gave their lives to ensure that the Death Star weakness would be known to the Rebels. They gave everything. The tyranny is very palpable and gives great meaning to the “New Hope” that they need so much by Episode 4. Also, how can one not be moved by the blind man using the Force to fight that heroically at the end? Not to mention the many different planets we get to go to.

I’m really sensitive to those “easier” connections a writer can make on their audience by connecting it to something nostalgic or an existing character. It was braver of them to imagine something completely different.

  2. Also! Let’s remember that the Khyber crystal is revealed to be both the element in the lightsaber and the element in the destructive power of of the Death Star. So we see the Light & the Dark at work using the same element to different ends. Top that off with performances from Grand Moff Tarkin and Leia posthumously?! Keith! How could you not love this film?!

    1. Josh, I’ll give you that it was well acted, but I don’t know. It bored me. I don’t remember any scene fondly (I’ve seen it twice) other than Vader going nuts. And that was great cause he’s from the original movies. Lol. I don’t know if I’d be interested in seeing it again. I don’t even remember any of the characters names. Each to their own. 🙂
